About HTML to Text Converter: Extract Text from HTML

This HTML to text converter turns markup into clean plain text. Paste raw HTML, a copied page fragment or an email body, or open a saved .html file, and the readable text appears on the right as you type. Headings and paragraphs are separated by blank lines, list items get bullets or numbers, table cells are split by tabs and rows by line breaks, and entities such as & and   are decoded. Scripts, styles, the document head, inline SVG, buttons and drop-down menus are left out, and by default anything marked hidden or styled display:none is skipped too.

Two extra tabs show what else is inside the markup: Links lists every unique link with its anchor text, and Outline shows the page title, meta description and the h1 to h6 heading tree. Options let you write link URLs after the link text, include image alt text, flatten everything into a single paragraph, and resolve relative links against a base URL. The HTML is parsed into an inert document in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, no script runs and no image is requested.

Common uses include turning an HTML email into a plain-text version, pulling article text out of a saved web page for notes or translation, cleaning content copied from a CMS before pasting it elsewhere, and auditing a page's links and heading structure.

How to use it

  1. Paste HTML into the input box, or click Open .html file to load a saved page.
  2. Read the extracted text in the Text tab, or switch to Links or Outline.
  3. Adjust the options for link URLs, image alt text, hidden content and structure.
  4. Copy the result or download it as a .txt file.

Questions

Can I paste a web address instead of HTML?

No. The tool works on HTML you paste or open from a file. Save the page or view its source first, then paste the markup here.

Can I convert an HTML email to plain text?

Yes. Paste the email's HTML source and the Text tab gives a plain-text version with paragraphs and lists kept. Turn on Show link URLs after link text so readers of the plain-text copy can still see where each link goes.

Does it run JavaScript in the HTML?

No. The markup is parsed into an inert document, so scripts never execute and images or other resources are never downloaded. Script and style contents are removed from the output.

Why are relative links shown without a domain?

Links are kept as written in the markup. Enter the page's address in the base URL field and relative links such as /about become full URLs.

How are tables converted?

Each table row becomes a line and cells are separated by tab characters, so the output pastes cleanly into a spreadsheet.

How is this different from just stripping tags?

Removing tags with a simple pattern joins words from neighbouring blocks, keeps script and style code, and leaves entities like & undecoded. This converter reads the document structure, so it adds line breaks where blocks end, drops non-visible content and decodes entities.
